Extended support for Vista SP2 ended on 1 so it does no harm to disable their automatic Windows Updates. There are several known issues with Windows Update on Vista SP2 computers that can cause a variety of glitches and unexpected performance issues (see the FAQ What To Do if Windows Update Hangs or Throws an Error pinned at the top of the VistaForums Windows Update board). If your friend hasn't already done so, disable automatic Windows Updates and re-boot to terminate any Windows Update sessions currently running in the background on their system. Note that there should be a yellow Download button on that Subscription tab that can be used to reinstall Norton after the old NIS is removed.
